How to treat heel spurs

Although heel spurs are usually long lasting problem, once they have begun to show symptoms, the heel spur sooner or later will disappear by itself. With the disappearance of a heel spurs treatment typically after 3-6 months, where untreated heel spur often only disappear after one or more years.

Treatment of a heel spurs takes time

Rest: it is important to rest and spare the foot from load baring, but continue to stay physically active. For many, this consists in practice of replacing burdensome activities such as running, handball, football, etc. with swimming, cycling, running in water etc.

Special orthotic insoles for shoes that are made to help heel spurs. Heel spur insoles along with the rest (mentioned above) is sufficient treatment for most patients

In addition, the following is used for the treatment of a heel spurs:

Inflammation-reducing drugs (NSAIDS-Non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs)
Injection of corticosteroid (cortisone injection)

Operation will only be considered in severe cases, where all of the above treatment options are tried without satisfactory results.

Prevention of heel spurs

The following advice and precautions can be used to avoid heel spurs

Footwear

Choose footwear with adequate shock absorption for sport as well as in daily life
Use arch supporting and orthotic footwear – pay particular attention to the fit around the heel

Go EVS. for an orthopedic surgeon or orthopedic Shoemaker for guidance about the above.

Body and exercise

Loss weight if you are overweight
Warm muscles and joints in the legs and feet well up before running
Stretch out for sport (especially the hamstrings and calf muscles)

If you run, it may, in fact, recommended increasing the distance as well as pace gradually; use if necessary. 10% rule – if you are in one week runs 3 x 10 km = 30 miles total, you should in the subsequent week maximum run 30 km + 10% = 33 miles (week no. 3 maximum 36.3 miles, week 4 max. 4 km), etc.

In addition, remember to be careful to increase distance and pace at the same time to decrease risk of plantar fasciits and heel spurs.

About Heel spurs

A calcaneal heel spur is a bony outgrowth that occurs on heel bone (calcaneus) and typically tip or hook-shaped.

The primary symptom of a heel spurs is pain or tenderness, which worsens when the foot burdened by body weight (for example, when you set off or supports on the foot). The symptoms of a heel spurs can be very annoying and for some, they can even be temporarily debilitating.

What is the cause of a heel spurs?

A heel spurs occur when a particular area of the body (e.g. the heel) are exposed to repetitive loads over a longer period of time. The body's reaction to this is to form lime in the loaded area. This results in the formation of a heel spurs.

Heel spursr can occur at the back of the heel or under the heel (the sole of the foot). However, they can also occur elsewhere on the body such as the arms or hands – typically in places which burdened a lot.

Plantar fascia

Long piece of connective tissue which supports the foot's arch. This connective tissue is also called the plantar fascia and has a central role in relation to heel spurs and a few other problems in the feet.

When the plantar fascia inflammes this results in pain and tenderness around the heel. It is important to underline that it is not heel spurs in itself that is causing the symptoms, but on the other hand, heel spurs inflammation of the plantar fascia, which is the cause of the symptoms.

Plantar fasciitis and heel spurs

Plantar fasciitis (plantar fascitis or fascitis plantaris) is an expression – actually a diagnosis –  which is used somewhat interchangeably for different types of foot pain. Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation condition that occurs in the plantar fascia. This does not include heel spurs in the sense that a heel spurs is not the same as plantar fasciitis – but on the other hand, a heel spurs be the reason that the plantar fascia inflammes.

The difference between the above is best illustrated in the fact that patients may have heel spurs without having symptoms, but may not have plantar fasciitis without having symptoms.

Although heel spurs and plantar fasciitis should not be ignored, the two are related and also have much in common — for example,. treatment is often the same as the risk factors are almost identical. In addition, the exact correlation between heel spursand plantar fasciitis is not yet understood by medical science.

Risk Factors

The following factors increase the risk for development of heel spurs are:

Excess Weight
Age (people over 40 years of age are most at risk of developing heel spurs)
Sport and physical activity that involves running, jumps and leaps
Deformities in the foot

In addition, shoes with poor shock absorption contribute to the development of heel spurs. The same is true if we increase training volume over a short period of time.

Symptoms of heel spurs

A heel spurs does not necessarily have symptoms and, in some cases, it takes several years before the symptoms occur. The typical pain by a heel spurs occur on the inside of the heel or under the heel. The pain is also often thus:

The pain is worse when you start to walk or run (for example, in the morning)
The pain decreases when the foot is hot (e.g. along the morning)
The pain Returns or worsens after prolonged walking or running (individually)

In addition, experience many, the pain worsens day after overload – IE. If, for example, runs extra far one day, will the pain worsens day after.

Orthotic insoles to protect your feet from foot pain

Orthotic insoles, Used by many as a means of protecting their feet from otherwise harmful shocks and pressure that can simply be inflicted upon the sole and heel of the foot. Orthotic insoles help to protect your foot by means of cushioning the heel and absorbing shock when needed not only that but orthotic insoles also provide stable support for the arch of the foot with arch supports. If you arch or plantar fascia is not correctly positioned or supported over time this may lead to damage and even may cause plantar faciitis, that is why it is important that people should leave their regular insoles behind and instead swap them for some orthotic insoles that have the correct arch support system built in them.

One of the reason why your arch of you foot may sustain damage is that gravity is constantly pushing down on the arch of your foot plus over time the muscles and ligaments that naturally support the arch may weaken as you get older thus artificial support is needed.

Did you know that you may also get orthotic insoles that have been specially designed for sport's and running? These wouldn't you have guess are called sport and running insoles. They adopt the same basic design and functionality as orthotics do but they are also have been designed and made from materials that can properly and will offer support even when playing sports and running where the level of shocks your feet go through is greatly increased.

The shock absorbing properties of orthotics means that when you walk and the materials that the insoles have been made out of (usually foam or silicone gel) will react to the shock and will spread the pressure and energy from the shock and distribute it evenly through out the sole and heel of your foot to minimize damage.

For people already suffering form foot pain orthotics are a good way to ease the pain, and also for people who are wanting to avoid and prevent such problems from occurring either now or in later life orthotics will help to prevent unnecessary damage and shocks to your feet whilst walking, running...jumping and will also strengthen your feet's muscles and plantar fascia meaning in later life you have a lesser chance of developing foot problems associated with older age for example plantar fasciitis is one of them.

Running faster for longer

Many sports professionals will dedicate a lot of there time and effort on building up the right running form, muscles, stamina and power to run faster or longer.
But something there is some thing's when you run that is out of your control, impact and gravity.
Energy that could be used to run faster can be lost through the impact you foot has on the ground. That is why running/sport insoles have been developed to cushion this shock and to make sure instead of energy being lost in the impact the insoles will instead cushion the impact resulting in your foot bouncing back more effectively.
The cushioning effect these insoles have that will help you run doesn't stop there, as the cushioning effect will also make sure that when you run any damaging shocks that could be damaging and may actually result in muscles fatigue is dealt with effectively so it has less effect.

Sport's and running insoles can also be good at preventing foot cramps plus image to your plantar fascia which would cause painful plantar faciitis which will really have major impact on your running. But thanks to the in built arch supports these insoles can actually support you foot in the correct position and offer support to the arch on your foot that is also in constant pressure not just from the impacts when you run but also from gravity (body weight), so it is important that it is well supported to stop foot cramps... remember nobody can run fast or long distances if you have cramp or foot pain.

"Preventing foot problems is needed. Running in ill fitting shoes and or having insoles that do not offer the right kind of support when you run can lead to damage and put your running career at risk....."

Sport insoles have been specially developed for running making them particular better when running and when there is a constant strain and number of impacts on your feet than orthotic insoles.
Another thing to note is that running/sport insoles are affordable though, not costing that much at all and comparing the prices between a new pair of running trainers and a pair of running insoles the price difference is huge, yet with the sports insoles you can place them in any of your trainers/shoes and instantly they will be better at running (and more comfortable).

Even a small change like wearing sport insoles or running insoles can have a massive effect on your running. Everything counts.

I have managed to find another related article that high lights some more features and reiterates the points i have made here... you can find it here: how to run faster sport and running

If you wish to ask any questions concerning running faster or sports or running insoles please you the comment box below.

How to grow taller, Shoe lifts a option not many people know about!

Something that not many people know about maybe (i think anyway) is that they are hidden away out of sight and out of mind and not many talk about them. What I am talking about is shoe lifts. A pair of these height increasing insoles can make the difference between average in height to being tall or being small to getting that extra height that will make you average in height.

Well, let me break the silence about shoe lifts and tell you a bit more about them. Shoe lifts with originally made for people for leg length discrepancy's and called heel lifts, but since shoe/heel lifts where first invented they have adopted a new purpose "height increase"!

The design of one of these height increasing insoles can differ entirely depending on your preference and what you would like them to support or how much height you want. You can buy either half insoles or full insoles.
Usually the full insoles cannot be adjusted in height but offer the best levels of arch support and comfort.... they tend to be also made from foam and span the whole foot often which arch support's built into them as well. Half insoles however just cover the heel part of your foot and can be adjusted in height. Half insoles because they are only supporting the heel of the foot offer a bit less support. Many prefer to buy the half insoles because of the option to adjust there height something of which you can utilize if you want to gradually mimicking human growth so people do not start to wonder and ask questions about how you where able to grow 3 inches over night. That right height increasing insoles make it possible to increase your height by as much as 3 inches! You are able to increase your height further with the stack system that is used in many adjustable shoe lifts but over 3 inches isn't advised as it may start to position you foot in a uncomfortable and unnatural position which may damage your foot. Shoe lifts have built in arch support and orthotics that means increasing your height by as much as 3 inches is safe and comfortable.
"Orthotic insoles are used by many worldwide to make uncomfortable shoes more comfortable and to help prevent foot cramps and discomfort."
Shoe lifts adapt the same fundamental principles and design features that orthotics do such as shock cushioning capabilities  the ability to spread the pressure that may build up on a certain point on your foot evenly so not to cause damage long term and short term.
The tapered design and arch supports (some half insoles may also have this built in as well) found in full insoles also help to support your foot in its natural position. This can deter and prevent the onset of such problems as plantar fasciitis a painful foot problem.

Okay so I have explained to you the design and how shoe lifts actually work so now it is time to tell you how exactly these height increasing insoles are a better solution over other methods such as height exercises. Im not saying that height exercise shouldn't be done but i am saying if you want fast and effective height increase shoe lifts is your best bet and height stretching exercises should be done fi you want to be more healthy, and have better posture which will help you increase your height but at a slower pace.
There are few and far between methods for height increase especially if you are at a age where you have stopped growing.
Height exercise can be done on regular basis to strengthen the muscles that support your spine and to also improve you posture...
Better posture and the ability to support your neck and body better will mean the effect gravity has on you will be decreased. Gravity is always pushing down on us and in effect will actually decompress our spines.

"This is why we are taller whilst we are sleeping than when we are going about our daily lives..."

There are quite a few stretching exercises to help improve your posture including stretches and yoga plus sports that involve alot of stretching like swimming and even basketball can also help you. But remeber you must constantly keep them up.. stopping may result in you falling back to you old bad posture and you muscles weakening again. Results can take a long time to start to show and all depends on how good your posture is when you start...
Wearing shoe lifts requires no effort and maintenance, that is partly why people wear them.
For the best possible height increase you may find that combining shoe lifts and doing height and stretching exercises will yeild the best results.

About plantar fasciitis and how to prevent it

The phrase prevention's cheaper than the cure has never been so true for something like Plantar fasciitis. It is a wide spread problem that affects more people than you may think according to some research that has been carried out recently as much as 1% of individuals will suffer from this medical condition that can easily be avoided. Plantarr fasciitis is caused by a inflammation of the Plantar fascia. One of the most common reasons for people getting this condition is due to them wearing poorly fitted shoes.
This is because poorly fitted shoes tend to damage the fragile plantar fascia which is membrane spans the heel bone all the way to your base of your toes. A common symptom of having plantar facitiis is heel pain. Yet another reason why people get plantar fasciitis is that people do not wear the right insoles that have arch supports fitted. If you think about it the natural shape of the bottom of your feet is not flat yet many shoes come with regular flat insoles fitted inside them. You wouldn't think this is much of a problem  but over long term use of flat insole shoes like this the problems can start to develop because if you just remember that your feet must support your entire body weight when you stand or walk plus in addition to this you are constantly under the added pressure of gravity which is pushing down on you and that arch on your foot. Over time this arch if not supported in the correct natural position can weaken and that when inflammation and plantar fasciitis can develop.
Another side effect of plantar fasciitis apart from foot pain is heel spurs. Heel spurs is actually when a small  spur forms around about where your Plantar fascia joins your heel bone. This is because more support is needed and that is why this outgrowth forms.

If you are a active sports person who regularly runs , but does not do adequate stretches which involves stretching the plantar fascia then you may also find that you could also develop this foot problem also.
This is because like all muscles and ligaments you must stretch them first to ensure that you do not a pull the muscle.

Previously I mentioned how the arch of your foot must support your entire body weight, being obese will mean there is a added pressure to this arch.

Did i mention that the materials that these types of insoles are made from also contain shock absorbing quality's? I didn't  Well i will mention it now then. When you walk you are constantly putting pressure and force on your feet... when you walk, run or jump when your feet hit the ground you will feel a sudden jolt or shock to your feet. This shock can be fundamentally damaging as over time if your feet are succumbed to this on a regular basis it can weaken and damage the ligaments and tissues in your foot. Orthotic insoles and plantar fasciitis insoles however act as a shock absorb-er and will absorb the pressure and shock's that your feet may go through on a regular basis and it will also spread the pressure (usually caused by gravity and body weight  which may build up on certain parts of your foot such as the heel evenly though out your foot so this damaging pressure does not build up in one place.

You can buy extra supportive insoles for plantar fasciitis that will support your feet in the correct arched position remember that buying unsupported  flat or even insoles that have been made out of the wrong materials that are either far to hard or even too soft may result in a bio-mechanical imbalance this is why it is important to buy a pair of insoles that are either made out of gel, foam or rubber this is because these materials offer firm support but also slightly molds to the actual shape of your heel as well thus adapting your own unique heel and foot shape.

It is ever so more important to consider buying a pair of plantar fasciitis insoles or orthotic insoles as you get older as with age the plantar fascia weakens and can be more easily damaged.
But that said it is also a good idea to buy some whilst you are still young as well in a effort to strengthen the plantar fascia and make sure you prevent any long term damage to it as well.

Okay, the prices of custom plantar fasciitis insoles or orthotic insoles can be quite expensive as they have to be tailored made and measured and molded according to your actual foot shape, you can though opt to buy standard ones that can come in many different shoe sizes and shapes and if you search you have got a very good chance of finding a pair which fits correctly, this is a lot cheaper than buying custom made insoles as these ones tend to cost no more than  £10. The affordability of the insoles doesn't mean that they compromise of protection or support either however you wont be getting arch support that fits exactly to you own foot arch the support is very good.

After you have bought a pair of these insoles you may find a huge difference in how comfortable your shoes will feel. This is because orthotic insoles and plantar fasciitis insoles provide the best comfort because of the support they give something that regular insoles do not.
Also you may find that you will be able to wear shoes that may have been uncomfortable before and that you can now wear them all day with no discomfort whatsoever.

If this article has now convinced you to invest in some orthotic or plantar fasciitis insoles then you have made the right choice and they are actually available online. You can also get specialized insoles for sport and running that are designed primarily for running and sports as well. It always best too buy some that match your actual shoe size and are not to big or too small because this may create problems for yourself.

As i mentioned at the beginning it is always best to find a solution before you actually develop this condition.
I do hope that i have covered any questions that you maybe having about plantar fasciitis if not please drop a comment below... You can also drop a comment if you have got any feedback on orthotic insoles and plantar fasciitis insoles and if they helped you or not and if you recommend buying them...

Thank you for reading my article about plantar fasciitis and how to prevent it. If you want you can tweet or share this article with your friends!
